This is the story of a love triangle between Toru Watanabe – a 17-year old university student – Naoko and Midori.

Naoko by being the girlfriend of Toru’s best friend who committed suicide, lives in a kind of sanatorium in order to recover from her mental illness.

On the other hand, Midori is a young woman full of live and hoping to definitely win Toru’s love.

By telling their story, the author describes the Japanese way of life in the late 60’s and beginning of 70’s having “Norwegian Wood”(one of the Beatles’ song) as a background.

A movie was made based on this book: Norwegian Wood (2010) with Ken’ichi Matsuyama, Rinko Kikuchi, Kiko Mizuhara.
